"Manhorse" is the official video for Husbands, taken from the album After the Gold Rush Party, and it was one of our favourites on the Best Of 2020 playlist. It was directed and created by LAMAR+NIK, and every animation in it was captured in camera using card stock and transparency sheets. The technique is barrier-grid animation, also called a kinegram or picket fence animation, an optical illusion that dates back to the 1890s: several frames of video are combined into one interlaced image and printed onto card, then a transparent bar mask is laid on top and moved back and forth to create the illusion of motion.

Spenser Sakurai was director of photography and Aeddon Wegrzyn-Van Zant assisted, with special thanks to Mason Drumm. LAMAR+NIK also released a behind-the-scenes look and printable versions of the animations so viewers could make their own.

About Husbands

Husbands are an indie rock band out of Oklahoma City, playing what they call landlocked beach pop with side quests into Krautrock, garage rock and tropicalia. Plenty of people file it under bedroom pop, which the band admits isn't inaccurate. The mood is wishful and soft-hued, though an existential undercurrent never quite drains away. It began in 2013 as a long-distance, file-sharing recording project between college friends Danny Davis and Wil Norton, and grew into a touring band by degrees. Somewhere in the middle Davis quit the 9-to-5 he'd held for years and moved to Costa Rica, and Norton left to focus on family. Davis now plays with Alberto Roubert on drums, Zach Zeller on keys and guitar, and Ethan Wilcox on bass. They headline their own US tours, play festivals including ACL, Lolla and GovBall, and have supported Goth Babe, Men I Trust, Cold War Kids and Wilderado, all at high energy and in good spirits. A fifth album is being written in the studio.
