Darvid Thor's "Changing Shape" is a song about how memories bend and shift over time and how that leaves our sense of self a little unmoored. The Naarm/Melbourne artist, once described by Triple J's Anika Luna as gentle and tender, released it through Beloved Recordings, and it made our June 2024 playlist.

Thor wrote it and produced it with Lewis Coleman, his Beloved label mate, who plays bass and keyboards. Hudson Whitlock's drums set the slow nod, Georgia Gamper adds backing vocals, and Henry Jenkins engineered and mixed it with Max Dowling mastering. The track sits somewhere between shoegaze and downtempo, with careful acoustic passages in each breakdown before the electric guitars finally erupt in the last quarter. Coleman and Thor filmed, directed and edited the video together.

About Darvid Thor

Darvid Thor is a songwriter, instrumentalist and label owner based in Naarm, Australia. He has played guitar since he was 12, alongside the friends he still has in The Cactus Channel and Karate Boogaloo, and has made records with a number of groups as well as his own. His solo work leans cinematic and orchestral inside indie and alternative music, taking the temperate and the tiresome and turning it into something more serene — an evenness that has become the cornerstone of his sound. Since 'I'm Never Really Here' in 2019, his woozy indie rock has drawn support from Beach Fossils, Danger Mouse, Double J, Triple J Unearthed and Indie Shuffle, among others. In 2024 the new music comes out on his own label, Beloved Records, home to Lewis Coleman and Rowena Wise.

Changing Shape lyrics

It's the way I’ve been all my life
Never known what I want
It dragged me underneath the world
On my way interstate
Take a chance
With another one
Look the other way
We could dance
Around each other again

In the space you carry
Full of everything that I used to know
Oh how it rushed in again
Like a memory, it just changes shape

Reflections on a different time
Reverie, sing to me
Impressed upon a state of mind
Memory, set me free
I’m alive but my body holds on
Letting go of time
Take a look at what’s in front of you
Mmmm

In the space you carry
Full of everything that I used to know
Oh how it rushed in again
Like a memory, it just changes shape
