Briana Marela's "Surrender" comes from her album All Around Us, released August 21, 2015 on Jagjaguwar. Experimental filmmaker and artist Christin Turner directed, shot and edited the video, working with Caleb Addison as assistant director, Anna Winter as first AC and assistant editor and Heather Fey on hair and makeup, with Grant Speich processing and transferring the Super 8 footage and thanks to the CU Boulder film department. Turner layered and composited black and white film to create a kaleidoscope of vivid prismatic colours, an homage to Kodak's earliest colour processes from the dawn of the twentieth century. The idea is to treat the torrent of emotions that comes with falling in love as blips and signals reaching through the darkness, sparking a supernova of light, motion and beauty that burns up its own exhaust and disappears as quickly as it began, a work that runs backwards and forwards, explodes and implodes, and burns brightly only to burn out.

About Briana Marela

Briana Marela is a Peruvian American composer, vocalist and performing artist based in Oakland, California. Her voice is the focal point, and around it she builds performances out of visually engaging, tech-augmented gestures and objects, drawing on both experimental electronic music and vocal-driven pop. Using a visual programming language and machine learning, she builds custom tools, so a composition can hold fixed elements and then open into improvisation. She was most recently the spatial sound artist in residence at Audium in San Francisco for its New Voices IV residency, performing a multi-channel piece live every weekend from February to April 2025, and she is currently a Montalvo Lucas Arts Music and Composition fellow. She received an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College in 2020. Her newest full-length, My Inner Rest, is due on June 6, 2025 via AKP Recordings; she has self-released albums in the past and put out records with Jagjaguwar, Surface World and PIAPTK.
