Skylar Spence

Skylar Spence is the name the Brooklyn electronic musician Ryan DeRobertis performs under, and it is not the first one. He started putting out music in December 2012 as Saint Pepsi, a more or less arbitrary tag for his experiments in sampling and taking pop apart, and the approach sharpened fast: the album Hit Vibes in May 2013 made his name in underground circles, as did the remixes of unlikely pop hits he circulated online, Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe among them. More tracks followed, including the single Mr. Wonderful in early 2014, and Carpark Records signed him that year with albums and live dates in mind. In early 2015, most likely to head off a trademark fight with the cola company, DeRobertis announced he would go by Skylar Spence from then on. It is the title of an early Saint Pepsi song, itself borrowed from Drew Barrymore's character in Everyone Says I Love You, Woody Allen's 1996 musical. The new-wavy dance-pop single Can't You See came first, and the debut Skylar Spence LP, Prom King, arrived later in 2015.
