Anyone living in the New York City area has to be extremely happy with 2016 so far, with the creation of not one, but two new music festivals. Earlier this year, Goldenvoice (the organizers of Coachella) announced that they’d be trying their hand in the East Coast with the Panorama Festival in July. Previously, the only major festival in NYC was Governors Ball, organized by Founders Entertainment. Not willing to give up their home turf apparently, Founders Entertainment made the surprise announcement of a new music festival taking place in October (an uncommon timeframe for festivals).
Taking place October 1-2 at Flushing Meadows (famously known as the site of the 1964 New York World’s Fair), The Meadows promises to be a new type of music festival in the NYC area that picks artists that are not only incredible in their music, but engaging in their performances as well. The inaugural lineup for The Meadows is impressive, with headliners including Kanye West (following a cancellation of his Governors Ball performance), The Weeknd, Chance the Rapper, Empire of the Sun, Grimes, and more. The Meadows also features other popular indie faces such as Sylvan Esso, Cage the Elephant, Mac Miller, and Metric, as well as a special Prince Tribute by Twin Shadow performing “Purple Rain.” Whether this is the result of a company wanting to expand its portfolio or competitive retaliation, the only thing clear is that the true winner here is anyone in the New York City area who loves music.
