Today, Two Door Cinema Club released a single off their upcoming album Gameshow, set to be released on October 14, 2016 by Parlophone Records. It's about time! The last time Two Door released a studio album was in August of 2012.
This new single, titled "Are We Ready? (Wreck)" shows a serious change in style for Two Door Cinema Club. Known for their energy, optimism, and variety, this Irish indie rock band rose to Bonnaroo status with only two studio albums. These albums, Tourist History (2010) and Beacon (2012) blended indie pop and indie rock in a way that made Two Door stand out. However, I'm let down by "Are We Ready? (Wreck)." This new single doesn't sound like Two Door Cinema Club at all. It's a sugarcoated, unorganized pop tune that could have been released by any up-and-coming Manhattan indie pop trio.
Evolving and changing styles can be a great thing. Take, for example, bands like Tame Impala and Turnover, who started off with relatively unimpressive first records and then developed a unique and attractive sound over the course of their anthology. By the sounds of this single, Two Door Cinema Club is making all the wrong changes, heading in the opposite direction of success.
Keep your ears peeled for Gameshow. Hopefully, Two Door Cinema Club defies my expectations and turns out an amazing record.
